Meadowdale Primary School

04/10/2019

The children have had a lovely week learning all about the book ‘Molly’s Jolly Brolly’. We have done some descriptive writing about Molly’s adventures, designed our very own umbrellas and also made some wax resist paintings. Next week, we will continue this story and will begin to teach the children about adjectives and nouns. In school we are encouraging children to recognise when to use a capital letter and full stop. It would be wonderful if this could be encouraged at home also.

In maths, we will be continuing to master our learning around the numbers to 10. We will be encouraging children to use different strategies to add and subtract e.g. number lines, counting on their fingers, drawing tallies or dots. We will also be talking about how we can use inverse operations to find fact families. For example, if we know that 4 + 2 = 6, we also know that 2 + 4 = 6, 6 – 2 = 4 and 6 – 4 = 2. After half term, we will be using all of our knowledge on numbers to 10 to support us with learning numbers beyond that. If you are wanting to do any additional practise with your child at home, encouraging them to show numbers accurately on their fingers is very useful. For example, children can show 6 fingers when asked and know that one more will make 7.

In topic, we will be continuing our learning about materials and will be conducting some science experiments to extend our knowledge of different materials and their properties.

In phonics, we will be learning the /er/ sound spelt er, ir, or and ur.

As usual, for home learning with your child we ask you to read as often as possible with them. As children become more fluent in their reading it is important to start asking them questions while they read to ensure they are gaining some understanding from their book. Thank you for all your support with this.
