Meadowdale Primary School

Sports Premium

In recent years, the Government has given additional funding to schools for physical education (PE) and sport. There are clear guidelines about how this money is to be used in schools. The Government expects schools “to achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools. It is important to emphasise that the focus of spending must lead to long lasting impact against the vision (below) that will live on well beyond the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding.”

Vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium

ALL pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:

1. the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles

2. the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement

3. increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

4. broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

5. increased participation in competitive sport

We have used this funding to further improve the quality of our sports provision, including:

  • regular staff training in P.E.
  • physical interventions for younger pupils such as Big Moves
  • developing a strong sports curriculum which ensures that the children are taught a variety of skills and specific games including: basketball, cricket, badminton, tennis, hockey, football and rugby as well as learning about fitness and the health benefits of being active
  • funding membership of our local area sports group to provide access to tournaments and leagues
  • visits from external providers such as tag rugby training by the Leicester Tigers for some pupils, basketball coaching by the Leicester Riders, tennis coaching, Zumba lessons
  • LADS and GALS programmes for building confidence and encouraging healthy lifestyles and well-being for children who are not otherwise involved in sport, Energise Club to help children to learn relaxation techniques to help them to cope with anxiety and stress
  • inclusive sports sessions with a specialist coach, sensory circuits and sports equipment for children with special educational needs and disabilities

We are fortunate to have a fantastic sports facility on our school site – our sports hall is a wonderful addition to our sports provision and ensures the high-quality provision which results in high quality outcomes. The school holds an enhanced healthy school award with Healthy Schools Leicsestershire for physical activity and healthy eating and our record in competitive sport is excellent.
