We all enjoyed World Book Day yesterday – we painted colourful pictures of foxes, made origami fox heads and used the percussion instruments to accompany a rhyme from Fantastic Mr Fox.  These were shared in a celebration assembly at the end of the day.  The book fair is at school until next Tuesday.

We have started our new topic this week called “Where in the world are different stories set?”  This topic has started with us looking at locating and naming the different continents and oceans as well as reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff which originates from Norway.  We will continue into next week with locating the continents and oceans on maps and labelling them.

We have also started to look at the use of the possessive apostrophe in English and will be reinforcing this, and other forms of punctuation in our writing.

In maths we have continued to work with money and have been learning how to give change from £1.  The majority of children have successfully added coins to make a total but are finding the concept of giving change tricky. It would be a great help if you could help your child with this at home.  We are also trying to reinforce instant recall of number bonds to 10 and 100( 4+6 = 10, so 24 + 6 = 30, and 40+60 = 100).

Next week in maths we will be moving on to telling the time. In Year 1 the children will have learned how to tell the time to both the hour and half hour. We will spend a short period of time reinforcing this before moving onto looking at quarter to, quarter past and telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes.

Your child has been given a maths homework sheet today which reinforces what we have been learning in the past few weeks.

Lost Property – we still have a large amount of unnamed clothes in or mobile. These will be taken to the lost property box in the main playground on Monday.  Please check that your child has their name in their jumpers.
