Phonics

This week the children have learned to segment and blend with the spellings/graphemes ‘ur’ and ‘er’ and learned to spell the word ‘her’. Next week we will teach the tricky word ‘like’. Over the next few weeks we will be revisiting the sounds sh, ch, th, ng, qu, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, oi, ow, ur and er until the children are secure with reading and writing words with these spellings. Please support this work at home by using the flashcards sent home last week. Refer to the weekly update from last week for examples of words containing these spellings.

Maths

This week the children have explored the number 19. They have also explored capacity by using the vocabulary ‘full’ and ‘empty’ as well as saying which container ‘holds the most’ and which container ‘holds the least.’ Next week they will explore the number 20 and begin their learning on halving.

Please continue with recognising, ordering and writing numbers to 20 at home.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have read the book ‘Pirates Love Underpants’. The children have worked on writing sequences of sentences around a topic.

Next week, we will look at the book ‘Mermaid’.

Activities

Over this week and next, the children are completing phonics and number games with their teacher to highlight next steps in learning. We are focussing on recognition of sounds and tricky words, recognition and ordering of numbers to 20 and finding one more and one less than a given number.

This week the children have finished their sea creature models and next week they will be completing an experiment looking at sinking and floating.

Other

Thank you for the junk modelling materials, please continue to send these in.

Thank you to the families of the Bees groups for choosing a book for ‘Book and Tell’. Next week, it will be the Dragonflies group.
