This week has continued to be a busy week in Year 2! We have been thinking about how the people of London tried to put out the Great Fire. We have looked at pictures of leather buckets, water squirts, fire hooks and gunpowder and have considered how effective these were in tackling the fire. Apologies to some parents in Beech Class who may have been squirted with water from a Calpol syringe! It seemed to be quite a good example to demonstrate how a water squirt worked!
There was a very good programme on Channel 5 last Saturday night called “The Great Fire of London Hour by Hour,” which gave lots of useful information. We have watched a snippet of it at school. Here is the link if you want to have a look at home. You may also find it on catch up. https://www.my5.tv/the-great-fire-of-london-hour-by-hour/season-1/the-great-fire-of-london-hour-by-hour
In maths we have continued with our work on Fractions. The children have been finding the fractions of shapes and know that a fraction is an equal part of a whole. Some children are finding it tricky to know that, for example, 1/4 says “one quarter” and 2/3 says “two thirds.” We have sent a maths homework sheet home today to try and reinforce this. Next week we will be moving on to finding the fraction of a number.
Please can you, or whoever hears your child read, make sure that your child’s reading journal has been signed every time? This would be really helpful as we are trying to keep on track of who reads regularly at home and where extra support needs to be put in to place.
We have a lunch trolley full of clothes without names again. These will be put into the lost property box in the main playground at the end of today. Please can you check that your child’s jumpers, hats, scarves and gloves are all named.
